What Branch?
I'm looking into the sub field of Health Psychology and the affects it has on patients in the hospital. Health Psychologists study how patients can handle illnesses, why certain people refuse to follow medical instructions when pertaining to pain medication and physical health. These psychologist focus on the affects of an illness and how the person copes during and after the completion of the illness. Health Psychologist must have education to the doctorate degree, they generally get an undergraduate degree of public health and biology to enter medical school. Many enter either a specific clinic or counseling company as after school training prior to being a licensed Health Psychologist. Generally they are state licensed and certified in a specific area.
What Fields Relate to this one? What is the Salary?
Health Psychology is related to and similar to Community Psychology and Counseling Psychology because they both are treating patients in the community that have experienced on some level a traumatic event. They have to help that person become stable and transition back into their community and life as it was prior to the situation. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Health Psychologists make an average salary of $91,810.
Who are the Prominent Psychologists or Professionals in this Field?
Shelley E Taylor got her undergraduate degree from Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut. She later attended the University of Yale for her Graduate degree in Psychology becoming one of the founders of social cognition, health psychology, and social neuroscience. In 2010 she won the American Psychological Associations Lifetime Achievement Award.
Why am I Interested in this Branch?
AS I said earlier I am a nursing major and hope to one day work in a hospital ER, on many occasions patients enter the ER in an unstable state of mind. Health Psychologists are there to determine whether a patient is coherent and in the right state of mind to be able to make medical decisions for themselves. The psychologists job is just as important as the nurses job, in fact a lot of times the nurse cant do anything or a patient unless they've been evaluated by the health psychologist.

Hi Madelyn! It's great that you're able to relate a field of psychology to your major. I like how Health psychology integrates the body, mind, and social aspects (like in your diagram) of a person, making it one of the most practical and significant fields of psychology. Your post is well organized and provides information about Health psychology that goes beyond the requirements. There were a few minor spelling errors, but other than that, your post was professional and well done.
ReplyDeleteHey Madelyn. First off I love your page, it really shows how much work you put into it and that you acually looked into the subject matter. I too am a nursing major and did not even think to do mine over health psychology. I did mine over behavioral psychology, which I think will be equaly as important to that field.
ReplyDeleteHey Madelyn! I have really enjoyed reading your blog so far! It was really interesting and informative. This branch of psychology is quite intriguing. I can see how Health Psychology could be very helpful in the ER. As well as it would be a helpful branch for you to look into as you pursue a career as a nurse.

So many events happen everyday where someone needs a trained psychologist to help them get through the situation. I have never realized how important psychology is until I came into this class.
