Sensation and Perceptions in Life

What is Sensation and Perception?
Sensation is the physical process of stimuli through sensory organs, so generally when someone can physically feel something touching them. Perception is the psychological process of interpreting and using information. For example something could touch my hand or arm and I use perception to determine what has touched me. These two things work together to help people both physically and mentally because they stimulate both parts of people.

Why should you care?
In life people can lose the ability to see, hear, feel, smell, taste and when that happens your other senses have to pick up the slack of that lost sense. In a paper that I read by Lore Thaler, a young women has lost her ability to speak and she uses echolocation to help her get around easier. Echolocation is using sound waves that bounce off of objects to determine where certain things are in a space so that someone doesn't run into the. Blind people use this technique because in using the echolocation they can sense where objects are in an area and avoid them based on the sound waves they receive. This means that they often walk around snapping their fingers, clapping, or making noise in general so that they can create sound waves. This technique isn't only used by blind people, it can be used by whomever wants to use echolocation. In the article it is stressed that all people have the ability to perform echolocation. People don't just develop the ability to echolocate because they lose their sight.

Why is this important?
Earlier I posted about a little girl who lost half of her brain and how her body adapted to the change of having only having half of a brain. Well these cases are similar because usually when someone loses something as important as a sense they need to have something make up for it or they'll struggle do to the imbalance of not having that sense. Echolocation is an adaptation that the body can use to help them make up for not having their sight anymore. Yes all people can use echolocation, however, many don't because they can easily see the objects in front of them and they don't need the sound waves to feel the objects. People that don't have their sight can use adapt and use echolocation to keep their body balanced through not having their sight.

Why do I care?
For me at a young age I really had a heart for people in the deaf community and their struggle to function normally in a hearing world. I took 3 years of sign language in high school and had a group of deaf friends that I frequently signed with and hung out with at school. I think that sign language in a way is the echolocation for deaf people. I really think that people find a way to live normally by doing anything to make their life easier. Sign language and the deaf community hold a place in my heart because of the hardship these people endure in life and that's part of the reason why I wanted to be a nurse. So that I could work in a hospital and use sign language to treat more people that need medical attention. Many times deaf people are unable to get the care they need because of the language barrier, I think that being a nurse that knows sign language will help better the community I work in and help me get a job as soon as I graduate.

  1. Hey girl! So i just read your post and man, you really know how to write. I really liked how you really focused on how to explain what exactly sensation and perspective was, but then made it more personal. I think it's pretty cool how you took 3 years of ASL and want to use that toward your career plan. I actually think sign language is so fascinating and wish I had the opportunity to learn it in high school! Overall, your blog was great and I really enjoyed the read!!
